Why do we stress the importance for an annual chimney inspection so much?

There are many reasons, but the biggest reason is for the safety of you, your family and your home. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Standard 211 states “Chimneys, fireplaces, and vents shall be inspected at least once a year for soundness, freedom from deposits, and correct clearances. Cleaning, maintenance, and repairs shall be done if necessary.” This is the national safety standard we follow, which considers that even if you don’t use your chimney often, animals and birds may nest in the flue or other forms of deterioration can occur making the chimney unsafe.

Whether your chimney needs to be swept or not is determined by the amount of creosote build up or other obstructions. A cleaning may also need to be preformed in order to properly inspect the chimney flue.

Prouty’s Chimney Sweep was founded in 2002 by Greg Prouty in Leesburg, Virginia. Greg grew up in the business, as his father was the owner/operator of Olde Towne Chimney Sweep for much of his childhood. He learned a lot from his father and builds upon that knowledge regularly with continuing education and classes with the National Chimney Sweep Guild and the Chimney Safety Institute of America. Prouty’s Chimney Sweep is CSIA Certified, Licensed, Bonded and Insured.

4) To promote and educate consumers about safe chimney and venting practices.

5) To conduct myself in a decent, respectful, and professional manner when in serving capacity as a chimney sweep, or when attending a function or event of an organization in the chimney or hearth products industry.
